Bhakti Tattva (The Philosophy of Devotion) in ISKCON
Bhakti Tattva refers to the philosophy of devotional service as taught in the Bhagavad-gita, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and the writings of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava ācāryas, particularly Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His followers. In ISKCON, Bhakti Tattva is centered on pure devotional service (śuddha-bhakti) to Krishna, which is the highest goal of life.
1. Definition of Bhakti
• Bhakti means loving devotion to Krishna, performed without material desires or selfish motives.
• Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī defines pure bhakti in the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.1.11):
• “Anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam
Ānukūlyena kṛṣṇānu-śīlanaṁ bhaktir uttamā”
• Translation: “Pure devotion is free from all selfish desires, speculative knowledge, and fruitive activities. It is performed only for Krishna’s pleasure.”
2. The Three Stages of Bhakti
1. Sādhana-bhakti (Practice of devotion)
• Following rules and regulations to develop love for Krishna.
• Includes chanting Hare Krishna, worshiping the deity, reading scriptures, and serving devotees.
2. Bhāva-bhakti (Awakening of love)
• A devotee develops deep spiritual emotions and attraction to Krishna.
3. Prema-bhakti (Pure love for Krishna)
• The highest stage, where the devotee experiences eternal loving service to Krishna in full bliss.
3. The Nine Processes of Bhakti (Navadhā Bhakti)
Bhakti can be practiced in nine ways, as taught in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (7.5.23):
1. Śravaṇam – Hearing about Krishna (e.g., Bhagavad-gita, Bhāgavatam).
2. Kīrtanam – Chanting and glorifying Krishna (e.g., Hare Krishna mantra).
3. Smaraṇam – Remembering Krishna always.
4. Pāda-sevanam – Serving Krishna’s feet (e.g., deity worship).
5. Arcanam – Worshiping the deity with love.
6. Vandanam – Offering prayers to Krishna.
7. Dāsyam – Serving Krishna as His eternal servant.
8. Sākhyam – Developing friendship with Krishna.
9. Ātma-nivedanam – Surrendering everything to Krishna.
Even practicing one of these processes perfectly can lead to liberation and Krishna’s eternal service.
4. The Importance of the Holy Name (Nāma Tattva)
• The Hare Krishna Mahā-mantra is the most powerful means of bhakti:
• “Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare,
Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare”
• Chanting the holy name purifies the heart, destroys karma, and awakens love for Krishna.
• Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught that nāma-saṅkīrtana (chanting the holy name) is the yuga-dharma (the spiritual practice for this age).
5. The Five Most Powerful Forms of Bhakti (Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 22.128)
According to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, five practices are especially powerful in awakening love for Krishna:
1. Chanting the holy name
2. Hearing Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam
3. Associating with devotees
4. Living in the holy places (e.g., Vṛndāvana, Māyāpur)
5. Worshiping the deity with devotion
Even a little engagement in these practices can awaken Krishna-prema (pure love).
6. The Ultimate Goal – Krishna Prema (Love for Krishna)
• Bhakti is eternal – the soul’s true nature is to serve Krishna (jīvera svarūpa haya—kṛṣṇera nitya-dāsa – CC Madhya 20.108).
• Material happiness is temporary, but Krishna’s love is eternal and ever-increasing.
• The highest perfection is to serve Krishna in Goloka Vṛndāvana with pure love.
Conclusion
In ISKCON, Bhakti Tattva teaches that:
1. Pure devotion to Krishna is the highest goal of life.
2. The best way to attain bhakti is chanting the Hare Krishna mantra.
3. The nine processes of bhakti help purify and elevate the soul.
4. Association with devotees, reading scriptures, and deity worship strengthen devotion.
5. Krishna-prema (pure love) is the ultimate perfection of life.
